I think this is because viewers tend to identify themselves with the characters and simply like to observe their way of living. Also, the episodes are usually full of unexpected turns and knowing that the events are not scripted and depict real life issues creates a lot of curiosity as to how they handle problems or misunderstandings. We get to see real emotions and personal moments of other people, which is not a common thing in our everyday lives.
