Why are people superstitious?

Most people are ashamed to admit that they are superstitious. Why? Because believing that something brings bad or good luck sounds ridiculous and completely irrational. Moreover, we live in the twenty-first century and such things bring to mind medieval times and not the modernity which is all around. Although common sense tells us something different, we often, even subconsciously, avoid doing particular things (like walking under the ladder) or do something strange in particular situations (like holding a button when we notice a chimney sweep). Well, it’s just something we can’t help no matter how well educated we are. There’s nothing wrong with it as long as it doesn’t lead to any completely irrational decisions which may have a negative influence on our life.
