What is high and low culture?
High culture is commonly described as the type of amusement available only to the elite or the wealthy part of the society. It’s usually of no interest whatsoever to an average Joe. Its forms include going to the theatre, ballets or opera. High culture requires a certain amount of knowledge of these types of art and a will to understand it. One has to be a lover of the field to be able to appreciate the value of high culture activities.
Low culture is everything that appeals to a mass audience. Its main focus is on popular music which seems to find a great number of supporters among the society. The other prominent example of low culture are movies, especially those shown in cinemas and soap operas which regularly gather its diehard fans in front of the TV. Low culture products usually find little understanding among professional critics.
