How long should a couple date before getting married?

    Priests and very religious people claim that engagement shouldn’t last too long because it’s indecent. In other words, if people want to have sex, they should get married as soon as possible. We are also told that living together before marriage is a sin! But is it a good idea to stick to these conservative rules? What can we practically gain in this way? Of course, we won’t be passed for sinners by elderly people around us, but that’s probably the only advantage of it.
    In my opinion, there’s nothing wrong with going to church and believing in God. However, we ought to do what common sense suggests because it’s our life and no one else’s.. There’s no point marrying anyone if we don’t really know this person. That’s absurd. As we all know, the Catholic Church prohibits divorce, so we should get to know our partner as well as possible not to make a bad decision. The only way to do that is to date our boyfriend/girlfriend for a long period of time, observe each other in various situations, talk about our expectations and plans, have sex, or even live together if it’s only financially possible.
    Couples who get married as soon as they meet, don’t seem too sensible to me.
