Do you believe small businesses will soon become “a thing of the past”? Why / Why not?
I think more and more people start to appreciate the better quality of goods and services offered by local businessmen. They also feel the need to support aspiring companies whose owner is somebody they can reach and learn about, rather than anonymous masses representing huge corporations. Other than that, small businesses are often run by one person only – this is common in the case of translators, journalists or graphic designers. They seem to appreciate the independence and other assets of being their own boss, so I don’t think small businesses will soon become forgotten.
In my opinion it is a very difficult time for small businesses. One thing is that big supermarkets and shopping centres are constantly being built in every town or city and they can afford to offer lower prices. This way they become a serious competition to small companies who can’t apply this in their own business. Customers are aware of this fact and gradually turn towards the great enterprises in search of what they need. The other thing is that the costs of running a business are high and now, especially in the time of recession, local businesses are being closed down.
